If you have fled persecution in your home country based on your religion, race, nationality, political affiliation, or political opinion, you may be eligible for asylum in the United States.
Who Can Apply for Asylum?
You may apply for asylum if you have experienced persecution or have a well-founded fear of future persecution in your home country based on one of these protected grounds:
- Race
- Religion
- Nationality
- Political opinion
- Membership in a particular social group
Important Requirements
- You must be physically present in the United States or arrive at a port of entry
- Generally, you must file within 1 year of arriving in the United States
- You must not have been convicted of a serious felony
- You must not pose a threat to national security
Benefits of Approved Asylum
- Protection against deportation to your home country
- Work authorization
- Social Security number
- Driver’s license
- After 1 year as an asylee, you may apply for permanent residency
- After 5 years as a permanent resident, you may apply for citizenship
